Addis Ababa University (AAU) graduated more than 6,000 graduate and undergraduate students of the 2020/21 academic year with the presence of government higher officials at Friendship Park on the 9th of October 2021.
According to the information from AAU Registrar, 3,604 Undergraduate, 2,390 Master’s and 169 doctors of philosophy (PhD) students graduated from the University, of which 30.1 present are female.
H.E. Sahle Work Zewde, President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, mentioned AAU on her speech to continue as a source of problem-solving researcher landmark and pursue its national activities of developing solution indicating directions.
Appreciating the increase in the number of female graduates, the President said, it is also important to not only strengthen this more but also give special attention to students who are learning in AAU with disabilities.
Encouraging that AAU has been able to increase its overall growth and become world-class competitive higher learning institution, the President called on the University to intensify its efforts to address national issues.
Cheering the graduates for completed their learning enduring all the pressures in times of fragile security issues and even visible crisis, the President advised them to work hand in hand and in harmony without repeating the mistakes of fabricated history.
Prof. Tassew Woldehanna, President of AAU, on his part said the undergraduates are well-versed in life skills training in addition to the theory and practical education, and will have a better chance of creating job, being hired and continuing their education than the previous graduates.
This year’s postgraduates are better than previous graduates as they have published their research papers in popular magazines and this shows that AAU is gaining a strong position in the research sector, Prof. Tassew said.
According to Prof. Tassew, AAU has been improving its international competitiveness by publishing more than 2,000 research papers in world-renowned and influential journals every year.
Mentioning Times Higher Education’s (THE’s) global ranking, Addis Ababa University is ranked 402nd in the world, 6th in Africa and 1st in East Africa of the 2022 ranking by comparing AAU with 1,600 universities worldwide, Prof. Tassew indicated.
As stated by Prof. Tassew, the rise of AAU’s international status is of great importance to the university’s graduates for job and education opportunities and has contributed a lot to the promotion of Ethiopia as well as Africa at the global level.
In addition to supporting major projects, including the Great Renaissance Dam, AAU has provided 60 million birr to our national defence force and more than 6 million birr in material and food aid devoted to those displaced by war and various causes, Prof. Tassew said.
According to Professor Tassew, the AAU issue of Authorization, which has been a question for many years, is close to being resolved. He thanked the government for its commitment and H.E. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) in particular.
Professor Tassew finally said that this year’s graduation was very colourful for it was held at the unique and attractive Friendship Park, adding that the event was very bright and a source of hope for the graduates.
