I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Babatunde Sotayo Sotunde as Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina, President and Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately.
Prior to this, he was the President and CEO of Anthem’s Medicaid division, overseeing a revenue of $33 billion, a figure higher than our country’s (Nigeria) 2020 revised national budget. Anthem’s total revenue was $104 billion in 2019.
Dr. Sotunde is a friend, a classmate, and a humble man. He hails from Ijebu-Remo in Western Nigeria. He attended St. Gregory’s College in Lagos, Nigeria, (1976-81) for his Secondary School and Ardingly College in United Kingdom (1981-83), for his Higher School Certificate. In 1983, he was admitted to Nigeria’s premier Medical School, The College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, Nigeria. We were classmates beginning in 1983 and we graduated together in 1988. In 1989, we worked together as Medical Officers in Trinidad and Tobago in the West Indies. From 1992-1995, we were Interns and Residents together at Howard University Hospital, Washington, DC. While he was in Pediatrics, I was in Medicine.
In our 1988 Medical School graduation year book, Dr. Sotunde’s quote was “A man who humbles himself by his own words and actions is destined for greater things”. Surely, he lived up to these wise words. Thus, from 1995 onward, Dr. Sotunde set his goals high. He spread his wings, aimed for the sky and soared like an eagle. He practiced Pediatrics and became a Fellow of the American College of Pediatrics. Further, he rose in the ranks to become the Chief of Pediatrics at Syracuse Community Health Center in Syracuse, N.Y. Still aiming high and raising the bar, he went back to school, completing his Executive MBA at the University of Memphis in 2001, and Health Care Management at the Wharton School of Business in 2003. The latter is a crown jewel of Business Schools in the United States.
Dr. Sotunde’s appointment as the head of Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina, USA, is a testament to his brilliance, discipline, hard work, diligence, perseverance, his constant zeal, and his meticulous attention to details as he aims for excellence.
My Friend, Dr. Sotunde, our class of 1988 and the entire Ibadan College of Medicine salute you as one of our pioneers in this your new field of endeavor as you continue to blaze the trail and conquer our human imagination. More grease to you elbow. We wish you, your wife, and your four children continued success. We will continue to support you as you march forward on your remarkable journey.
