(BOWIE. Since last year, the university improved to #25 on the list of the nation’s outstanding HBCUs. Bowie State also tied for #35 on the Best Undergraduate Teaching list and for #61 on the Top Performers on Social Mobility list, both ranking Bowie State among regional universities in the north. Each year, U.S. News & World Report continues to recognize Bowie State among the best regional universities that offer a full range of undergraduate majors, plus master’s and doctoral programs.

For the HBCU ranking, the publication uses nearly all the same indicators as it does for its regional universities list, but with slightly different weights, including admission and graduation rates, student retention, faculty resources, and alumni giving. It also assesses the results of a separate peer survey for HBCU administrators.

The best undergraduate teaching list evaluates schools, where faculty and administrators are committed to high-quality instruction for undergraduate students. College presidents, provosts and admissions deans, who participated in an annual U.S. News peer assessment survey, were asked to nominate up to 15 schools in their Best Colleges category, with a strength in undergraduate teaching. The list, based solely on the responses to that peer survey, includes schools receiving seven or more nominations.

The social mobility honor highlights Bowie State’s success in serving large numbers of students with federally funded Pell Grants, typically awarded to those with family incomes under $50,000. Most Pell Grant recipients are students whose family household income is below $20,000.

Rankings like the U.S. News & World Report list reaffirm the high quality of a Bowie State University education.
